Ecosulfonate is a acrylic acid copolymer and AMPS in a water solution. It is used as a high temperature dispersant for water based drilling muds (WBM’s). It is used to control the viscosity and gels strengths of WBM’s that have high solids concentrations. Ecosulfonate adsorbs onto the surface of clay platelets, preventing the flocculation off bentonite particles at high temperatures (up to 430F500F). Ecosulfonate tolerates seawater, NaCL and KCL.

Ecosulfonate should be mixed in the water base mud system slowly over one full circulation through the rig hopper. Treat system as needed with 0.1 – 2.0 ppb (0.29- 5.7 kg/m³ ) during drilling operations to thin the mud. Be careful not to overtreat system in order to avoid barite settling.
